A bit of history
VertsHuset Skarven is located in two buildings that are side by side down by the harbour - in the southern part of the city to be more precise. Skarven Kro and Arctandria Seafood Restaurant are located in the brick building and Skarven’s BiffHus is in the yellow wooden building. All of Skarven’s various options are accessible through the same entrance.

The yellow wooden building dates from the middle of the 1800s. The white brick building was built in about 1908 when the Tromsø Butter Factory (later Tromsø Margarine Factory) was established. The Tromsø Margarine Factory operated here right up until 1957, when the factory relocated to new premises. The property company that owns both the old and the new building is called Pellerin and is named after the French man Auguste Pellerin, who originated margarine production in Norway.

Margarine production started in Norway on October 1, 1876, in Oslo (a useful fact for future spreading!)
After the margarine production was moved to more modern premises in 1957, the buildings housed businesses of different types, including storage, printing, offices, an architect’s office, a master glazier and now a restaurant operation.
